MWS Clock Plugin description
Add style and grace to your Windows Mobile device. Designed to be peaceful, stylish and discreet, this intelligent homescreen/Today plugin solution gives you a completely new view on your appointments and your message status.
Windows Mobile is a fantastic tool, versatile and yet so small.
The size of the mobile device makes it very flexible, but at the same time it calls for extra care in using the precious screen space. It is a total waste of space to display a lot of non-information such as 'you have no mail', 'you have no SMS' and so on.
The Mobile With Style (MWS) clock plugins are created to present a peaceful, stylish screen that doesn't display unnecessary information. Behind the scene there are plenty of things going on to give you the information you need, when you need it.
The "information noise" that otherwise could litter the screen is suppressed, giving a clean, calm and readable display where the important information gets focus. The basis of the MWS screen is an analog or a digital clock. If there's nothing else to report, that's all there is. A clock.
When an event calls for your attention, appropriate information will be added to the screen. When the information is no longer needed, it is removed from the screen.
A clock style defines either an analog or a digital clock, and includes over 100 parameters that allow you to fine-tune the display of the clock.
Clock hands, face and digits are freely selectable from a list of installed components, and if you can't find any suitable components, you can create your own. You can add whatever color you like to the clock parts or add a surface pattern from a file. You can even select to use the current background image as surface for the clock parts, something that gives quite cool results when you add an indent effect (as the clock face in the image to the left).
To add some depth to the display, you can add emboss effects and shadows to the clock parts; if you can't find the effect you're looking for, you can create your own.
The size and position of the clock is configurable, and if your device handles screen rotation you can have different settings for landscape and portrait modes. The clock plugin works with whatever background image you have defined in your Home or Today theme.
The status info
Around the clock, status information will be displayed when appropriate ...and you are the one that decides what is appropriate and what is not!
Do you want to see operator information only if it changes?
Do you want to see a Task summary only when you have Tasks to attend to?
Do you want to see mail information only when you have unread mails?
No problem, just configure the filter rules to display information as you want it. Intelligent rules work in the background to keep the screen free from unnecessary information. To control the decisions made by these rules, you have a large number of parameters at your hand.
The status information is displayed in the screen space around the clock; the exact location of the displayed information depends on your defined clock size and position.
The MeetRing is a special feature that in an instant gives you an overview over your appointments for the coming 12 hours.
Surrounding the clock face is a ring (the default MeetRing components are simple rings in various widths, but you can add you own MeetRing component if you want some other kind of display) that is visible the times you have appointments and invisible when you are free. In case you are completely booked the coming 12 hours, you'll have a complete circle around the clock face. If you have no appointments, the MeetRing is completely hidden.
Since the MeetRing visually is tightly integrated with the clock face, it is only available in styles with an analog clock face.
The MeetRing appearance is configurable in the same way as the clock parts; select image, color, surface, effect and shadow to create the look you want.
The configuration program
Configuration of the clock plugin is done with an accompanying configuration program;
the MWS Clock Settings program.
All parameters that control the clock plugin are available through the configuration program, and you can load/save a complete configuration setup as a style.
You can save an unlimited* number of styles for easy retrieval when you want to change the look on your device.
You can load new styles either explicitly by using the MWS Clock Settings program, or integrated in a Home Screen or Today Theme. The latter enables automatic clock style selection when a new Home/today theme is selected.
On Smartphone/Standard devices, you can easily integrate the clock style selection in the home.xml file that controls the configuration of a Home Screen. On Professional/Pocket PC
Home screen integration
The MWS Clock plugin for Smartphone/Standard devices is loaded as an ordinary Home Screen plugin. It is designed to be more or less alone on the screen, but if you want other plugins to be available at the same time this is no problem.
The plugin can be loaded in either Generic or Fixed mode:
In Generic mode, no style is defined in the home.xml file. The plugin will use whatever style that is loaded through the MWS Clock Settings program. Generic mode gives maximum flexibility where you can mix Home screens and clock styles in whatever way you like.
In Fixed mode, the home.xml file include a style definition. The plugin will use this style, and the MWS Clock Settings program can only be used to edit this style, not to load any new style. Fixed mode gives a convenient way to switch the complete setup (Home Screen and clock style) in one go.
Together with the clock plugin, one generic and a number of fixed example home.xml files are installed. Of course, you can add additional home.xml files (or edit the existing ones) if you want other clock styles to be loaded along with the home screen selection.
Today theme integration
The MWS Clock plugin for Professional/ Pocket PC devices is loaded as an ordinary Today plugin; once installed, you can select the plugin in the list of available plugins in the Start - Settings - Today configuration screen (Items tab). It is designed to be more or less alone on the screen, but if you want other plugins to be available at the same time this is no problem.
The plugin can be loaded in either Generic or Fixed mode:
In Generic mode, no style is defined in the Today theme file. The plugin will use whatever style that is loaded through the MWS Clock Settings program. Generic mode gives maximum flexibility where you can mix Today themes and clock styles in whatever way you like.
In Fixed mode, the Today theme file include a style definition. The plugin will use this style, and the MWS Clock Settings program can only be used to edit this style, not to load any new style. Fixed mode gives a convenient way to switch the complete setup (Today theme and clock style) in one go.
Together with the clock plugin, a number of example theme files are installed. Unfortunately there is no easy way to edit Today theme files, and the available theme editors does not include the specific setting required for the clock plugin. If you are a registered user, you can get some Theme creation help on the support forum.
Clock component creation
All clock components (clock face, clock hands, clock digits and the MeetRing) are defined in standard image files and you can create your own if you don't find what you're looking for amongst the delivered components.
All effects and shadows are defined in standard xml files, and of course you can add your own if you want some effect that isn't included.
As an appendix to the user manual, a component creation guide is available; this guide gives all the details on how to create your own components, and it also includes templates for all types of components.
As a registered user, you can download additional components from the support forum, and you are also encouraged to share your designs with other users.
- Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone or Pocket PC
- Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard or Professional
- All existing screen resolutions and screen orientations on devices capable of displaying 64K colors. It does not work with devices that display 272K colors.
- The demo version has full functionality but is time restricted to work only the first 4 hours after the device boot. Prolonged evaluation period can be achieved by rebooting the device.
- 15-20% overall performance boost (though most of it is in background processing so it isn't that obvious)
- On some display resolutions/orientations, some of the Settings program pages weren’t correctly formatted. Fixed.
- The plugin didn't run on devices without a built-in phone. Fixed. The plugin now work as intended on WM 6.x "Classic" devices and WM 5.x devices that are not "Phone Edition". (Clasic/Professionl/Pocket PC)
- On Smartphone/Standard devices, the use of "System Font" for status info and date could on some resolutions result in a font size that was not the same as used by other loaded plugins. Fixed. Please note that this might cause the font size to be changed when you upgrade to this version. (Standard/Smartphone)
