If you want to take up Japanese, Pocket Kanabuddy is an excellent freeware app to help you learn and revise. It is limited to katakana and hiragana but that is better than nothing.

You can choose to hide the equivalent western text or the Japanese character in order to test your knowledge.

Note: the display will not be correct if you recopy the fonts hiragana.ttf and katakana.ttf to the directory Fonts in Windows. They are copied with the .VB during installation.
